Fitbit Blaze Review
I have had this watch for about 4 weeks now and I think I really got to
know it. So let me tell you my thoughts.
The Fitbit Blaze was sent to me over from the lovely people at Fitbit. The Fitbit Blaze features a colour LCD touchscreen display, which is very nice to navigate though and use day to day. The resolution on the screen is actually great and everything is nice and clear, however Fitbit doesn’t have the exact resolution specs as yet. The Fitbit Blaze is about 9.2mm thick which is actually quite thin if you compare it to the Garmin Vivo HR+ which is 58.8 mm or to the Apple watch which is 10.5 mm thick. The weight of the Fitbit Blaze is totally dependent on which strap you buy. Using the default straps, it comes in at 44g which is actually a bit lighter then the apple watch weighing in at 45.6g. The Fitbit blaze actually needs a case or frame for the Fitbit to stay on your wrist. The frame that I have, is made of stainless steel including the buttons. This makes the buttons have a very sturdy and expensive feel to it. The Blaze’s straps are made of an elastomer material like that found on other sports watches. The Fitbit Blaze costs just under $200 USD. The Fitbit Blaze also will be available with a choice of Black, Blue or Plum colour straps, but you can also pick up leather straps in three different colours ($99.95 USD) and a stainless steel bracelet ($129.95 USD). You
will be able to find a lot of different frames as well, from rose gold to rainbow colours, on eBay or Amazon. I will link a few bellow.
In terms of functionality ,
my favourite feature has to be, rotating my wrist to see the stats on my watch. You're also getting heart rate monitoring all-day
during your activities, sleep tracking, call and text notifications and other alerts, and music control. You will be able to change the different watch faces by going into the Fitbit app and choosing out of a number of watch faces. The watch also has normal things like stopwatch, timer, and alarms where you don’t have to use the app to set the alarm which I really enjoy to do. There are also two other menus’ that the Fitbit has which I haven’t seen any other company do. The first menu is a Fitstar app which has 3 options to chose from, warmup, 7 min workout, or 10 min ab workout. What this app does is give you a set of different exercises to do and guiding you with animations. The second menu is a relaxation app. What this app does is it monitors your breathing and then helps you to breath deeper and helps you relax. There is a 2 min session and 5 min session. Now, going back to the basic functionality, using the GPS to track your run requires your phone to supply the positioning data for your workout stats. The Fitbit also has MultiSport which lets you select an activity like running or biking and give you the relevant data while SmartTrack will recognize exercises even if you've gone all old school and not told your wearable what you're going to be doing. Fitbit promises a 5-day battery life out of the Blaze, with a charge time between an hour or two. This actually feels rather fast compared to the Garmin that I have also reviewed. Connectivity takes place over Bluetooth 4.0. The smartwatch is "sweat, rain, and splash proof" (no rating), but not swim proof and the company advises against showering with it, stating skin care reasons. Hmm?
What things do I dislike about the Fitbit?
Probably the biggest thing that irritates me the most is that there is a very,
tiny, little gap in between the screen of the watch and the plastic casing
around the screen. The reason why this irritates me is that somehow I
managed to get some dirty stuck in the gap and now I can’t clean it out. I am
not sure if it’s my fault for not treating the watch right or Fitbit for making a
very, very, tiny gap? The Fitbit also has a bit of a thick bezel and I think they
could have made them a bit smaller to make space for a bigger screen. Also
another thing that I dislike is that I need to take the Fitbit Blaze out of the
frame to charge it and the frame has a design that makes a lot of dust and little things get stuck in the corners of the frame. But to be honest with you these are all little things and may not be such a big problem for you.
How about the Fitbit app? Well, to be fair with you I actually really like and enjoy using the app. Fitbit have updated the app about 3 weeks ago and there was a great change to the app. They made all your stats very accessible and very colourful. If you have completed your goal for the day and you open the app you will get a very nice animation with a star and confetti. Also in the app you will be able to see right away how many steps you have done, floors climbed, Km travelled, calories burned, your active minutes, your exercise goal, how well you slept, your resting heart rate, and steps per hour. You will also be able to edit what you see. Let’s see how the exercise goal works. When you click on the exercise icon you will see the sports or exercises that you have done this week. You will also see where you ran and give you all the stats on any exercise you have done. The Fitbit will track your sleep as well. But how does it do that? Well using the heart rate sensor, the Blaze shows your time in light, deep, and REM (when your dreams are more vivid and heart rate is elevated). This helps you better understand your sleep quality. Also you will be able to share your results with anyone you wish. The app also has other features like some challenges, Fitstar Personal Trainer, you can message some workout buddies and also manage your account. So overall I really enjoyed the app, how easy it is to access your stats, and I do see myself using the app a lot!!
So to sum it all up.
The Fitbit Blaze can be stylish when going out or for a sportswatch when working out in just a couple of seconds. This is definitely one of the top smartwatch’s on my list that I have tried. If you want a very colourful, accessible app with a very light weight and small smartwatch this is
definitely a smartwatch you should consider. Price wise it is in the average
price range about $100 USD cheaper than an apple watch so I think the pricing is about right. So what more could you ask for?
