Is a $69 Smartphone Worth Buying?

Hello everyone, I manged to get hands on a $65 smartphone call the ZTE Chat and today you are going to find out if it is worth buying.

So ZTE Chat has a plastic removable back cover.

Removing the back cover revels the micro SD card slot that can

hold up to 32GB and a full sized sim card. Also there is a removable 1850mAh battery, that hasn't even lasted a day for me.

At the rear there is 5MP camera with Auto focus, and a LED flash. The camera is decent, but not great by any means. The camera can takes some decently okay photos, but the quality simply isn’t there for more advanced uses. The camera also includes 4 different modes; normal mode, video mode, HDR (high dynamic range) mode, and panorama mode. There’s no Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) meaning you really have try and keep the phone still to get a good shot.

At the back we can find a small speaker which sounds bit better than a crying donkey.

The ZTE Chat's display is a bit of a let down. With its small 4.5”screen and the poor resolution the display is not so pleasant to look at, but it is usable. The display also is a little washed out, and bright sunlight can make it almost impossible to see what’s on the screen.

The software of the ZTE Chat is a little outdated. The Chat runs Android 4.4, which is around two years old, and while it’s perfectly fine, it might be a bit of an adjustment if users are more familiar with more recent versions of Android. However, if we put that to the side, the Chat works like a normal Android phone. There’s some useful tools like a File Manager, FM Radio app and a Voice Recorder, but then there’s also some less necessary stuff such as ZTE’s own Calendar, Contacts, Gallery, Email, Messaging and Music app, which really are quite unnecessary.

So is the ZTE Chat worth buying?

Well the ZTE Chat is a budget smartphone, it’s not going to compete against a top of the range smartphone. But the ZTE Chat is meant to be a basic phone designed for more basic needs, and like that, it performs well. Yes, maybe the screen and camera could be better, but you can't ask a lot from a $69 phone. For the price, you can easly grab one of these phones, without worrying about it being lost or damaged. So if you’re looking for a simple phone, at a virtually unbeatable price, then the ZTE Chat is the way to go.
